Colchester Golf Club In The News

AGM 2008

Last week at Colchester Golf Club was centred not on golf but the Annual General Meeting when Mike Sutton took up the reins as Captain of the Club for the coming year. Sutton, who started his golfing life as a junior at the club has been heavily involved in its management in recent years and has run the golf committee for the past six years. Along with his Vice-Captain Trevor Cock, a well know local businessman from West Mersea, they will form a formidable pairing to take the club forward.

Sutton in his acceptance speech acknowledged the efforts of his predecessor Mike Mays and thanked all the staff for their efforts in the past year. He particularly thanked Keith Chinnery and his green keeping staff for presenting the course to the members in such excellent condition throughout the year and was confident that this would continue. He went on to acknowledge that all Golf Clubs were likely to have tough times in the current economic downturn and although having a limited number of vacancies for the first time in many a year Colchester Golf Club, being a members club, had a sound financial base, a superb asset in its golf course and could look forward positively to the future. Despite the late hour he then had the traditional drive in on the first hole.

Earlier the ladies section had their AGM where Bridget Whitworth was voted in as the Ladies Captain, her Vice-Captain for the year is Maggie Demuth and there is no doubt that the ladies section can also look forward to an upbeat year. Robert George will Captain the Junior Section for 2009.

East Region PGA Championship on Sky

Last July Colchester hosted the East Region PGA Championship which was covered by Sky Television when local golfer Paul Curry set up a new course professional record on both days with two 64's. This Championship will be shown on Sky Television on October 17th, Sky Sports Xtra at 17.30 and for the early risers shown again on October 18th, Sky Sports 3, 05.00. An opportunity for local golfers to play the course and try to emulate Curry's achievement could be taken on an open day for local golfers to be held on Thursday October 9th where a limited number of spaces remain available. Details of the availability can be obtained from the Golf Club office.
